Background History
From the 17th to 19th century, African American were slaves to the White and were treated as inferiors like common animals. Some did not even have basic needs, which unfortunately led to their deaths. Many inventions in factories such as the cotton gin solidified the importance of slaves in the South. However, the North opposed the idea of slavery in the South, resulting in the American Civil War. Although Abraham Lincoln preserved the Union and abolished slavery, African-Americans were still "not free". They soon had enough of the inequality in America, hence creating an opposing force with several actions and events called the African American Civil Rights Movement.S
In this picture, it displays how African-Americans were denied of educational and voting rights, decent housing as well as jobs and pay. They were 'socially excluded'.
